America's Good News: Wednesday, October 28, 2026

From American history

In 1933, Gus Lintner, the agriculture teacher in Fredericktown, Ohio, was outfitting his chapter's FFA band for the national convention in Kansas City. Then he spotted a blue corduroy jacket in the window of a local hardware store. Lintner tracked down the supplier, the Universal Uniform Company, and had the chapter's name stitched across the back in gold thread. When the Fredericktown members debuted the jackets in Kansas City, the look was such a hit that the convention's delegates made it official FFA dress. The millionth jacket sold in 1964, and today more than 80,000 sell every year, each one needing 1.6 yards of corduroy. Not bad for an idea from a hardware store window. In America, the farm kids set the fashion.
