America's Good News: Tuesday, October 27, 2026

From American history

In 1878, firefighters at Chicago's Engine Company 21 were stacking hay in the third-floor loft for the horses that pulled their engine when the alarm bell rang. Firefighter George Reid skipped the stairs, grabbed the long wooden pole used to bind hay onto the wagon, and slid straight to the ground floor, well ahead of everyone else. His captain, David Kenyon, saw genius. He talked the chief into letting him cut a hole in the floor, though the chief warned Kenyon he'd pay for the repairs if the idea flopped. The crew shaved a Georgia pine beam into a 3-inch pole, varnished it and waxed it with paraffin. Other companies laughed, until Company 21 kept beating them to fires. Soon the chief ordered poles in every Chicago firehouse. In America, even gravity joins the fire department.
